Vienna, 1932
A rare and magnificent two-tiered cabinet by Eduard Wimmer-Wisgrill, 1932. This unique cabinet was designed by Wimmer-Wisgrill for a bridge room in a 1932 exhibition at the Austrian Museum in Vienna and was manufactured by the illustrious Wiener Werkstatte, a workshop known for their fine materials and expert craftsmanship. This striking cabinet is embellished with gold leaf in a chevron pattern and then incised with geometric patterns on alternating strips. The cabinet rests on a simple black painted support; the interior is painted black.

In the late fifties and into the sixties, Phillip Lloyd Powell and Paul Evans shared a studio and collaborated on many creations. This charming cabinet is an excellent example of the fruits of their labor. Evans is responsible for the iconic fish scale motif, in welded steel and gold leaf, on the cabinet’s gate. The delicate (optional) linen curtain is original and in excellent condition. Powell carved, stained and doweled the locally grown Walnut.
