| item name : | Silver Leaf Surround Sofa by James Mont | | designers : | James Mont | | Era : | Circa 1950's | | Country of Origin : | USA | | Materials : | Wood, Textile > Silk, Technique > Silver-Leaf | | item description: | A silver leaf surround sofa by James Mont, c. 1950.
A mahogany brown, silk velvet sofa surrounded by a silver leaf frame with five balustrades. The upholstered sofa has a gently curved back and splayed arms, the balustrades are turned and support an upper shelf and a lower plinth that wraps around the newly upholstered sofa. Designing built-in furniture and space specific pieces with a subdued glitz was James Mont's forte.Since his furniture business began by designing hide-a-way bars for mobsters, his pieces often have an architectural feel and sometimes include hidden drawers or a place to exhibit one’s treasures. This piece typifies the presence each Mont piece holds: the grandeur and the glamour of a Hollywood star and the drama and the pretension of a bootlegging mobster.
