| item description: | An important cinnabar lacquered and gilded chinoiserie console server by James Mont. Designed and built in the late 1950's, this piece reflects an interesting convergence of Art Deco, Moderne and Asian design which typifies James Mont's work. The centerpiece of the cabinet is an antique Chinese carved and gilded screen or grill backed by smoke mirror. This cabinet is one of several pieces of furniture that was created using related Chinese architectural elements. This console is nearly identical to a black lacquer version sold at Rago Galleries. The console is comprised of four pieces, the base is one unit with a large drawer flanked by two cabinets, the top center is a shallow decorative chinoiserie grill flanked by two cabinets with gilded faux lanterns mounted on each. The cabinet was originally purchased from Mont's showroom in Manhattan for a Sutton Place, Manhattan apartment.
Excellent original condition. Condition is nearly perfect, exceptional quality gilding and shaded lacquer work.
