This desk is the only one in existence and plans and drawings of the desk still exist. He designed the office rooms and the furniture for the Airlines and was also in movie and television production designing furniture for several movies, including “Return of the Pink Panther” and “Superman”.

This King-sized canopy bed, nearly 8 feet (or 2.3 m) tall, is a paradigm from the Argente series and is the only one of its kind. It uniquely showcases the Argente motif with the bed’s structure perfectly displaying the vertical and horizontal welded waves of polished and matte black aluminum. A concealed inner rail accommodates a curtain and a recessed ledge on top was designed to support a fabric canopy or mirrored ceiling to the bed. The Argente pieces were sold and
marketed by Directional, a noted furniture showroom. They were advertised at the time as “art furniture” in magazines such as the New Yorker, but each piece was made by hand, one at a time, in Evans’ studio. The motif was labor intensive and welded aluminum is very difficult to work with, consequently few pieces were made. Nevertheless Evans created custom-made Argente pieces and such examples are characterized by generous, almost defiant, proportions. In the context of Evans’ body of work, Argente is less three-dimensional and more attuned with painted canvas but on welded metal.
A pair of silver leaf horse lamps by James Mont, c. 1950. Each has a wooden shade with a carved edge, and a plinth that holds a carved statue of an Asian warrior mounted on a horse, slumped down as if weary from battle. The lamps are finished in a smoked silver leaf, a favorite of Mont’s. Mont’s Turkish background, with its unique blend of Western and Eastern traditions, influenced his designs and the Asian horseman often symbolizes status and power as well as the introduction of new cultures and traditions. This symbol is fitting for a Mont piece since he was the purveyor of “Chinese Modern” interiors and often produced pieces with Asian leanings such as these lamps. Bench by Zaha Hadid USA, 2003 Cast and enamel in aluminum
H 46 W 166 D 55
Working Proof Tallix Art Foundry
USA 2003
This working, foundry proof is the first precursor to Zaha Hadid's Bench, subsequently produced by Max Protetch in an edition of twelve. This original form was cast in California at ADM and produced by Tallix Art Foundry in 2003. As the form reached its final stages of production, yet to be patinized, the computer-generated version was refined. The refined edition of twelve (aside from two artist's proofs) produced by Max Protetch differ from this original in form and finish. Lee Balter, owner of Tallix Art Foundry, purchased this example from Max Protetch in 2004. Tallix later produced the Bench displayed at Zaha Hadid, the 2006 exhibit held at the Solomon R. Guggenheim museum. Sold with a photocopy of the original bill of sale from Max Protetch, Inc.
Powell’s powerfully dramatic doors are a paradigm of his artistic expression and mastery of wood. Now in his late 80’s, these doors were inspired by ones found in the artist’s own home. Despite his lengthy and prolific career Powell has only created a handful of doors. These doors were the result of independent creative impulses rather than a directed commission. Powell always honors the integrity of the wood by emphasizing knots and natural irregularities. The doors are hand-chipped carved Pennsylvanian walnut with tiger figuring throughout and secured with cast iron nail heads. Powell remains an avid international traveler and incorporates found pieces into his creations. The striking Tibetan brass pulls are contrasted to sinister yet discreet Medusa head coins. The doors are suitable for either an interior or exterior setting. Powell’s signature gilding process with fiery red underlay frames the door, also found on the opposite side.
Domestically proportioned pieces by Jack Rogers Hopkins are exceedingly scarce and highly sought after. Hopkins is an important and influential sculptor/furniture designer who helped defined the California design scene in the 70’s. He mastered laminated wood and applied it to never seen before forms. Although Hopkins created other chairs, this is an exceptional and unique piece. The Rocking Chair simultaneously pays homage to one of the most cherished American pieces of furniture while realizing the form in a creative and dynamic manner. Despite the form’s ingenuity and presence, it is surprisingly comfortable.
