USA, c 1973
A Polished aluminum table by James Butchart for Trans World Airlines, c 1973. A glass top rests on an abstract base that leans forward and contains one moderately sized drawer on the left side. Butchart designed this one-of-a-kind table specifically for an office in Trans World Airlines in New York; it was made from the same material, in the same UK factory where the nose-cones for the Concorde were made. This desk is the only one in existence and plans and drawings of the desk still exist. He designed the office rooms and the furniture for the Airlines and was also in movie and television production designing furniture for several movies, including “Return of the Pink Panther” and “Superman”.

| | item name : | paul evans argente bed | | designers : | Paul Evans | | Era : | Circa 1970's | | Country of Origin : | USA | | Materials : | Metal > Aluminum, Technique > Painted, Technique > Hand Painted, Technique > Enamel | item description : | Custom King Sized Canopy Bed by Paul Evans
This King-sized canopy bed, nearly 8 feet (or 2.3 m) tall, is a paradigm from the Argente series and is the only one of its kind. It uniquely showcases the Argente motif with the bed’s structure perfectly displaying the vertical and horizontal welded waves of polished and matte black aluminum. A concealed inner rail accommodates a curtain and a recessed ledge on top was designed to support a fabric canopy or mirrored ceiling to the bed. The Argente pieces were sold and
marketed by Directional, a noted furniture showroom. They were advertised at the time as “art furniture” in magazines such as the New Yorker, but each piece was made by hand, one at a time, in Evans’ studio. The motif was labor intensive and welded aluminum is very difficult to work with, consequently few pieces were made. Nevertheless Evans created custom-made Argente pieces and such examples are characterized by generous, almost defiant, proportions. In the context of Evans’ body of work, Argente is less three-dimensional and more attuned with painted canvas but on welded metal.

Working Proof Tallix Art Foundry
USA 2003
This working, foundry proof is the first precursor to Zaha Hadid's Bench, subsequently produced by Max Protetch in an edition of twelve. This original form was cast in California at ADM and produced by Tallix Art Foundry in 2003. As the form reached its final stages of production, yet to be patinized, the computer-generated version was refined. The refined edition of twelve (aside from two artist's proofs) produced by Max Protetch differ from this original in form and finish. Lee Balter, owner of Tallix Art Foundry, purchased this example from Max Protetch in 2004. Tallix later produced the Bench displayed at Zaha Hadid, the 2006 exhibit held at the Solomon R. Guggenheim museum. Sold with a photocopy of the original bill of sale from Max Protetch, Inc. | | item # : | TMF1030 | | price : |
