Pre-Order Todds New Book
In the fall of 2008 Rizzoli will publish Todd Merrill’s “MODERN AMERICANA: STUDIO FURNITURE FROM HIGH CRAFT TO HIGH GLAM”. This seminal book will explore the diversity of aesthetic visions, from studio art to high-end design, that emerged in the second half of the 20th Century. Twenty-four generously illustrated chapters will profile twenty-six designers and provide an overview of their creative development.

James Mont Exhibition
Roué, rogue and man-about--town, James Mont (1904-1978) was a charismatic charmer with high-profile clients and an anger management problem. Along the way – and his way was wayward – he is said to have designed interiors for show business marquee names such as Bob Hope (best man at Mont’s wedding), Irving Berlin and Lana Turner. More firmly documented is the work he did for east-coast Mafiosi, including Frank Costello and Lucky Luciano, which likely began during Prohibition when Mont created unique custom bars for their homes. Hot-headed and mercurial, Mont’s bad temper and willfulness got him in trouble and debt repeatedly during a roller- coaster career lasting four decades. As a designer, his creativity, perfectionism and delight in innovation produced both elegant, high style interiors and over-the-top kitsch.
