Designer : Maurice Bailey

Maurice Bailey was the lead designer for Monteverdi—Young who introduced his Signature Line in 1956. Refined materials such as hand-loomed fabrics, silk, chenille, mohair, rubbed and glazed leathers gave the line a distinctive and sophisticated look and attracted an affluent clientele. A variety of custom finishes added to Monteverdi—Young’s cachet as a luxury furniture company.

Baileys’ association with Monteverdi—Young lasted approximately five years. One of the more visible pieces they made together was an aluminum chair available with either brass or walnut legs and accents. Bailey’s six-sided desk also sold well, offering an unusual but symmetrical dimension. A collection of tables were made with mahogany, walnut, teak and occasionally marble. Plush and stylish tufted upholstered pieces were also sold for the home and office.

As a teenager in 1934, he won a scholarship for a summer course in sculpture at the Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles. Bailey instead pursued interior design, later becoming head of the department at Chouinard, and even helped develop the Interior Design program at the University of Southern California in 1951. About 1952, he opened Maurice Bailey Design in West Los Angeles to create architectural sculptures and hand-made, one of a kind mosaic table tops and murals.  In 1961 Bailey closed his shop, which was one door down from the Monteverdi—Young showroom, and decided to work more closely with the growing number of wealthy clients requesting his interior design services.

Bailey’s new projects ranged from the personal to large scale. He received several international commissions including an assignment in 1963 to design the interiors for the newly built, 480 room Athens Hilton. In 1966, as a result of his success with the Hilton, Bailey received a unique, high profile commission in Greece from Holiday Lines of Piraeus to outfit the Lina A, a 200 foot yacht with 28 cabins, to accommodate overnight passengers traveling between various Greek islands. By the late 1960s Bailey created a niche for himself by continuing to design the interiors for several ships.
