Pierre Cardin
Designer : Pierre Cardin (Pierre Cardin b. 1922)
Pierre Cardin started his career in the Dior haute couture atelier. Less than a year later he opened his own house which in just over a decade would become the first global fashion brand. While Cardin ultimately over-franchised his name and logo, his furniture designs were proudly his own creations.
Examples of Cardin’s tables and consoles from the seventies and early eighties are some of the best examples of French “disco chic” furniture, rivaling Willy Rizzo and Maison Jansen. Like these contemporaries he was influenced by Asian design and Art Deco. His designs were characterized by chrome, sharp edges, a tight palette and flawless lacquering. While his licensed products often had his name or logo emblazoned inconspicuously, his furniture designs were far more discreet. Nevertheless, many pieces were signed or distorted his initials into a decorative pattern or emblem. In 2000, the Design Museum in London presented “Sculptures Utilitaires” a major exhibition of his furniture designs. Capitalizing on the renewed interest in the pieces he designed for the home, Cardin recently opened a shop in Paris focusing on interiors.
