Designer : Fontana Arte
Fontana Arte is one of the most celebrated and collected Italian lighting manufacturers. A host of important 20th Century architects and designers, including Gae Aulenti, Renzo Piano and Ettore Sottsass, have contributed to their reputation and longevity. Most importantly is Gio Ponti, who helped establish the firm in the early 30’s to focus on using glass for furnishings and lighting in interiors. Over the company’s history Fontana Arte has been involved with both large scale projects and creating unique custom high-end creations. The most notable individual pieces were created after World War II. The company was invigorated in the years during Italy’s reconstruction filling orders for universities and companies (like Fiat). Gradually projects with more aesthetic demands and greater budgets, from Banks and National Museums, followed. Yet it was the private commissions that were the best impetus for artistic development. Max Ingrand would replace Gio Ponti in 1954 as artistic director. In-house designers, like Piero Raimondi, or artists, such as Duilio Barnabé (aka. Dubé) would be both prolific and dynamic producing some of the best designs in the late 1950’s. In the early sixties the company expanded their offices and factories. Gio Ponti would return in 1967 as a “distinguished consultant” and also resumed designing. The company would continue a tradition of working with the most talented Italian architects and designers and remains in business today.![]() | 65 Bleecker Street New York, NY 10012 Tel: (212) 673-0531 Fax: (212) 677-6068 info@merrillantiques.com |
