Harvey Probber

Designer : Harvey Probber

Harvey Probber (1922 - 2003)

Brooklyn born Probber sold his first design for a sofa at the age of 16. Largely self taught, he took evening classes at the Pratt Institute and worked with a New York furniture maker. His furniture company, Harvey Probber Inc., was founded in 1945.

Best remembered for introducing sectional, modular seating, Probber also designed the famous sling back chair seen in MOMA's collection.  Probber's furniture was inspired by geometry, but always adhered to his philosophy that functional is not nearly enough. He softened severe modern lines with elegant fabrics, colorful laminates, and delicate hardware.

Probber's sleek lines and functional modular designs remain collectible today, as examples of great twentieth century design and elegant furniture perfectly suited to today's lifestyles.
